What Men Want - 05/15/2010
I ran across a terrific plan the other day, to encourage men to come to church. I found it at Churchformen.com.
Our meeting was focused on statistics and discussion items for what keeps men out of church, and what we can do about it. There seems to be enough interest, so I will present it to our day School Ministries Board and see if we can get an event scheduled.

Walking Worthy - 04/17/2010
Ephesians 4:1b urges us "to live a life worthy of the calling we have received"...  After all, "there is but one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Faher of us all - who is over all, and through all, and in all." (Eph 4:4). Being worthy comes with a heavy message behind it:
  • He chose us in him before the creation of the world (Eph 1:4)
  • He predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ (Eph 1:5)
  • In him, we have redemption thorugh his blood (Eph 1:7a)
  • Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit (Eph 1:13b)
  • In order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace (Eph 2:7a)
  • His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose. (Eph 3:10)
These passages make us aware of how special Christians are. -- chosen, pre-selected, redeemed, and given a rubber stamp of approval ("Paid in full"), so he can show us off and tell the universe that he is proud of us for being a part of his crew.

I am not saying that Christians are Perfect. Meremy that we do have assurance that God thinks each of us, as individuals that follow him, are worthy chilrdren -- and we should live up to that expectation.

Faith Like Potatoes - 02/20/2010
This month we watched a video, which was an inspiring true story of a rugged South African farmer, named Angus Buchan. He's a Zambian farmer of Scottish heritage, who leaves his farm as the result of political unrest and racially charged land reclaimation. He travels south with his family to start a better life in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. With nothing more than a small camper on a patch of land, and help from his foreman, Simeon Bhengu, the Buchan family struggle to settle in a new country. Faced with ever mounting challenges, hardships and personal turmoil, Angus quickly spirals down into a life consumed by anger, fear and destruction.

Based on the inspiring true story by Angus Buchan the book was adapted for the big screen by Regardt van den Bergh and weaves together the moving life journey of a man who, like his potatoes, grows his faith, unseen until the harvest.

Tough Scheduling - 01/2010
The only date we had available for meeting this month had a mens conference and a basketball tournament.

I'll be Seeing you(?) 12/12/2009

In this session, we looked at a passage in Matthew, that talks about a group of people who do things to be seen.

Think about this:

  • When it comes to church, what do you think God has in mind?
  • When it comes to day to day living,  is it important how things look to other people?

The point of Christianity is to see and do what is true and good. There is a difference between acting and action.

Getting What you Need from God 11/14/2009
Discussion on a featured video by Rob Bell, called "Kickball".  The material from the video directed us to consider our attitudes on the topic "What we can get from God".  Sometimes our expectation of what will be delivered is differnt from what we will receive. How can we know or should we know, what to expect from God?

Luggage - 10/24/2009

Rob Bell talks about Luggage

With some fear and trepidation in the planning, we held our first Men's Ministry Meeting, under the leadership of David Jay.

If you are curious about the meeting format, check the news index on the left for details.

In our opening spiritual formation discussion, we watched a video that helped us focus on life struggles we have had in the past.  Some of the questions, asked and answered, included the following:

1. What kind of wounds do you have? How do those wounds affect you today?

2. Have you ever gotten revenge on someone?

3. How come God does not step in when people get hurt? Why doesn't he stop bad things from happening? Is he in charge in these situations?

4. Dealing with forgiveness, and how to heal the emotional wounds of the past.
